Pickleball is a popular racquet sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. It is played with a paddle and a ball similar to a wiffle ball on a court that is smaller than a tennis court. Pickleball is a great sport for beginners because it is easy to learn and can be played by people of all ages and skill levels.

To start playing pickleball, you will need a few basic pieces of equipment. These include:

  • A pickleball paddle: Pickleball paddles are smaller and lighter than tennis rackets and are made of materials such as wood, composite, or graphite.
  • A pickleball: Pickleball balls are made of soft plastic and are slightly smaller and lighter than tennis balls.
  • A pickleball court: Pickleball courts are smaller than tennis courts and are marked with lines similar to a badminton court. They can be made of a variety of surfaces including grass, concrete, or wood.

Once you have your equipment, you are ready to start playing pickleball. Here are the basic rules of the game:

  • The court is divided into two halves by a center line. The service line is located 7 feet from the net on either side of the court.
  • Players serve the ball diagonally from the right side of the court to the left side of the court for the first serve. After the first serve, players can serve from either side of the court.
  • The ball must be served underhand and hit the ball on the ground in the opposite service box.
  • Players must let the ball bounce once before hitting it, and the ball can be hit before or after it bounces.
  • The ball can be hit into the air or kept low to the ground.
  • Players must hit the ball back and forth over the net until one player misses the ball or hits it out of bounds.
  • The ball can be hit with any part of the paddle, but players are not allowed to hit the ball with their body or clothing.
  • The team that scores a point gets to serve the ball for the next point.
  • The first team to reach 11 points wins the game, but the game must be won by at least a two-point margin.

In addition to the basic rules of pickleball, there are also a few strategies that beginners should keep in mind:

  • Always keep your eye on the ball: This will help you react quickly and hit the ball accurately.
  • Use the "third shot drop": After the serve and the return, players should aim to hit a soft shot that lands near the net and bounces twice before going over the net. This is known as the "third shot drop" and is an effective way to set up a point.
  • Vary your shots: Mixing up your shots can keep your opponents guessing and give you an advantage. Try hitting hard shots, soft shots, and shots to different parts of the court.
  • Cover your partner's side of the court: In doubles play, it is important to cover your partner's side of the court and be ready to make a play on any ball hit to your side.

Pickleball is a fun and enjoyable sport that can be played by people of all ages and skill levels. With a little bit of practice and these basic tips, beginners can quickly learn the game and start enjoying all that pickleball has to offer.
